Birth - 3 Matters
The Birth to Three Framework was introduced in 2002 by SureStart. The Framework takes as its focus the child, and steers away from subjects and curriculum heading. It identifies four aspects, which celebrate the skills and competence of babies and young children. These four “aspects” are:
- a Strong Child
- a Skillfull Communicator
- a Competent Learner
- a Healthy Child
The Strong Child aspect enables the practitioner to work within the framework to develop a child’s awareness of self, builds self confidence. Also helps the child to form relationships in interacting with others and the world around them.
The Skilful Communicator aspect helps the babies and children to develop skills of being understood and understanding others. The babies and children learn how to express themselves through facial expressions, sounds, pointing and spoken language.
The Competent Learner is developed in encouraging the children to explore, experiment and interact as they seek to learn about the world around them in the four component areas of making connections, being imaginative, being creative and representing.
Healthy Child is developing the child’s mental and physical well being. This is developed through the four component areas of emotional well being, growing and developing, keeping safe and making healthy choices.
The team come together within the nursery to plan for the Birth to Three Framework. The practitioner takes the child’s needs at the heart of their planning. In developing the child’s individual development through planned activities under the four different aspect of the framework.
